WHAT I DID TO WORKOUT IN THE EVENING:
It was the most gorgeous weather out tonight so I went for a brisk walk (doesn't "brisk walking" sound less cheesy than "speed walking"?). I even sweat a little bit but the wind was refreshing and it felt good to breath in the fresh air and feel the blood pumping through my body. After the walk I just sat on my porch and read my "Nutrition for Dummies" book for 1/2 hour. Great way to end an evening. This is two nights this week that I've done a jog or walk in the evening..... I may see if I can keep that rhythm up on top of boot camp because it really is calming.

Since starting at GrandRapidsBootCamp in Oct‘08 I’ve found a great routine with a trainer 3-4 mornings a week and I’ve recently started counting cals.I feel better physically, mentally and spiritually.I'm often asked for workout plans & recipes.Blogging these things will help me to stay accountable and may also help others.I don't claim to be an expert and I don't even claim that every day I do things right. What I do claim is responsibility for every decision I make every day.

PREDNISONE IS THE DEVIL!!!!!!!!
So these steroids I'm taking for my sinus/sickness stuff not only make me feel jittery and on the edge.....they increase appetite.......but since I'm watching my calories closely and can't "feed the beast", that makes me irritable and on the edge too..... to make it even better, they make my face red and hot and swollen.............. so, you think that's bad........well..........wait for it................ they also make you retain fluids and gain weight!!!!!!!!!!!! Yep, aren't they AWESOME!?!?!?!?!?
Three more days to go on them...............

Day 16: Workout (90 Day Challenge)
Today was "luck of the draw" at boot camp. After our 8 minute running warmup along the river, we stayed at camp and played a game of chance.
The game is played with playing cards. Each card is associated with an exercise. When you pick a card, you have to run to that spot and do that excersice. You keep choosing cards until the end of the session.
This was a fun workout!

Day 15: Workout (90 Day Challenge)
Today was special because my friend/co-worker Missy came to boot camp with me. I remembered how much easier it is to wake up when you know someone is counting on you being there!
Last night, Mel and I ran 2 miles and it felt great but this morning I could tell that basically doing 3 workouts in 24 was going to be rough on my body....my legs were TIRED. It was still good to get them moving and limbred up for the day though.
It was a little sprinkly at first but it cleared up and the breeze was nice as we did our run through town.

Today was a good day at boot camp (although still muggy and humid as all get out!)
We started with a run and were encouraged to push ourselves hard on the way back....which I did. It felt good to push hard.
PS. My legs are tired :)

Day 12: Workout (90 Day Challenge)
I wasn't exactly excited about waking up and going to boot camp on a Saturday morning but today I learned that, no matter what day of the week it is, getting outsdie and working out is the best way to start any day! It was SOOOO humid that I was sweating immediately but God provided a nice breeze to keep me a bit more comfortable....thank you God!
We ran into town today, doing different exercises along the way. As if I didn't love the stairs we did last week enough, Wendy found even more challenging, even steeper, even narrower, stairs for us to do today. I think we did about 300 stairs in all (that includes step ups). That's somewhere around 35 flights of stairs if I have it right??? Ok, let's be honest, I ran about 250 of those and walked the other 50....it's hard!
The other cardio exercises we did included:
- shuffle
- mountain climbers
- power jacks
- sprints
The other strength exercises we did included (all with resistance bands):
- bicep curls
- tricep extensions
- shoulder pushes
- wall sits
- push ups
- inner thigh lifts
- sit ups
- knee up sit-ups
- front planks
- side planks
- lower ab leg cross sit ups
- hmm, I think there was at least one more but I can't remember

Day 10: Workout WITH PICTURES!!! (90 Day Challenge)
I couldn't go to boot camp yesterday because of a work retreat that I had to be in GVille early for so I went today and I'll have to go Saturday (I love boot camp but I'll miss sleeping in : ))
Today's workout was a hardcore-ish strength workout. We focused on five major exercises, doing each of them for one minute and then switching to the next for a total of 4 sets. Ok, I know that doesn't sound like a lot but 20 minutes straight of these things burns your upper body out!! (I included some pictures one of the trainers took because some of these are not common exercises).
1. Undulations with heavy braided rope (it's like your whipping a horse) for a minute...yes, that's me in the middle
2. Run/sprint for a minute straight
3. TRX, pulls for our back
4. Reverse lunges while holding 30lb slosh tubes at our chest (these are filled with water so they work your balance a ton and are obviously for strength training)
5. Chest presses with 30lb ammo cans filled with sand (definitely had to take one break on these at each set)
For the remainder of the work out we did biceps, triceps and core.
For core we did:
Good workout, my upper back and shoulders are already sore......here's to trying to blow drying my hair...... : )

Day 8: Workout (90 Day Challenge)
I'm pretty sure it wasn't a good idea for me to go to boot camp this morning but I was up all night from some new meds I'm taking so I decided if I was up I might as well move......well, I moved.....at about 50% what I normally give (with a pause of laying on the sidewalk when I thought I was going to pas out). Oh well, I guess I moved.
Thankfully today was the 2nd day of a new session (for beginners) so the workout wasn't too strenuous. I walked the 4 minute warm up across the bridge and then we did a familiar circuit where I jogged the whole thing (definitely not running).
The circuit included:

Day 3: Workout (90 Day Challenge)
OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! Today was the hardest running workout Rob has ever done (he even admitted that himself)!
We started running into town, doing tricep dips, pushups, step ups, etc.
But then we started going up Michigan Ave.......which is a HILL, a VERY BIG LONG HILL. We wound around and, even though I was already out of breathe, we ran up 100 stairs, we did more pushups and dips at the top and then ran back down the 100 stairs.
When we got to the bottom of the stairs, he sent us BACK UP! Everyone was out of breath and, at this point, our legs were burning out as well. At the end of that stairs we went down and back up one more hill before starting to head back to the park.
Amongst all of that, we did..... squats, wall sits, this thing where you lift yourself up on a wall like you're trying to climb over it..again, and again and again, resistance stuff for our arms with a partner, etc.
I'll have to confirm with Wendy who tracks it but I bet we did between 2.5-3miles today.
Back at the park we did a ton of core work including 3 planks and flat body crunches. We also did donkey kicks and inner thigh work. We probably did more but, by thtat time, I was too exhausted to remember.
It was so challenging, I wanted to walk several times but I never did. I feel accomlished...and exhausted. Mostly I keep thinking "Did I REALLY do that today????"

Sex and the City Premiere
Wendy (a co-boot-camper and also a trainer) and I working at the Sex and the City Premiere at Celebration Cinema last week.
It was great to advertise for boot camp by sharing my story and how boot camp has helped to change my body and my life. I was hesitant to do it because I felt like posting my before and after pics was too vulnerable but I was so glad I could encourage others! Hopefully God continues to use my story to encourage others!
Day 2: Workout (90 Day Challenge)
It was storming this morning so we worked out inside at the volleyball school........it was HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT. Even before I started working out I was too hot and then Rob told us we'd be doing a circuit that included speed/agility work as well as back to back strength training sequences.
I was literally DRIPPING sweat.....even to the point that my hand towel was too saturated to use anymore. GROSS.
The speed/agility part of the workout included:
And. Stretch.
Thank goodness it's over. I can still feel the blood pumping through my veins and my shoulders were sore as I shampooed my hair so this could be a sore day : ).
Day 2 down, 88 more to go!

- shuffling through a cone maze
- jump rope
- pushups
- crunches
- flys, lying on our backs
- overhead lifts, lying on our backs
- military presses
- rows
- bicep curls (using resistance bands that were so heavy I got blood blisters on my hands)
- tricep dips
- jump squats
- split rear lunges
- star jumps
- forward lunges

Day 1: Workout (90 Day Challenge STARTS!)
Today I woke up STILL feeling sick, but also strangely energized to get back to boot camp!!
Today is the 1st day of the 90 Day Challenge http://grandrapidsbootcamp.com/site/90-day-challenge.php
There are 8 people from the morning class doing the challenge and I don't know how many other people from the different classes so that's some competition if I want to get the $1000 cash prize.
We worked out first, doing TRX (http://www.fitnessanywhere.com/) . Rob had a frame made for his truck so we all worked off of that in the parking lot.
It was great to see people staring when they drove by, trying to figure out what we were doing. I LOVE TRX! Seriously, it is such an intense strength training workout. We did entire body, working from legs, to chest & back, to arms and then finishing with core work. We did some skipping, running, butt kicks, high legs, etc for cardio as well.
I'm glad that Rob made this frame so that we can do TRX outside. It makes me so happy so I hope we do it a ton. I always feel stronger and like I look more toned when we do TRX.
After the workout we got our weight, measurements and new pictures. His scale read 3lbs more than mine but that could be due to a lot of things. I still need to figure out what my personal goal is going to be. Rob had suggested that we all pick a piece of clothing that we hope to fit into in 90 days but I really don't want that to be a goal. I either want it to be a fitness goal, or a weight loss goal. I was thinking about making it 20-25lb loss. I still need to talk with Rob before I suggest that though.
He told us today that part of this challenge is a grocery store "tour" where we learn more about food and how to shop well. There are also possibly "pantry raids" where Rob will come to your house and go through your food (sort of Jillian Michales like).
Hmm, this is going to be a good challenge---- I need to continue to push myself and I'm glad that I have this to help me!!!!!

I'M BACK!!!!!!!!!!
For the last 12 days I've been sick........... and........yep, I'm still sick. During this past week I've still been strict about my calorie counting but I took a break from the workouts (aside from walking). That was in an attempt to get my body to rest and recuperate but it was VERY hard. I had a couple people holding me accountable, telling me I literally "could not" work out. I'm thankful for those people.
One thing that is not super awesome is that I lost more weight this week than I did the weeks when I'm working out. HOWEVER...I felt like CRAP emotionally and physically all week and I missed my workouts like crazy.
Even though I'm only about 90% functioning, I am going to go to boot camp tomorrow. Tomorrow is the start of the 90 Day Challenge (with a $1,000 grand prize!). I posted details about the challenge in an earlier post but essentially, you set a personal goal, work out at boot camp AT LEAST 3 times a week, hand in weekly food logs and meet with the trainers. Everyone who completes these goals will have their name in a raffle, if your name is drawn, you win.
For me, I feel like I need to take these next 90 days to challenge myself even further beyond the 90 Day Challenge. I already KNOW that I can work out as much as is required and I know I will be able to meet a personal goal (I've had a lot of practice over the year :)), but I want to push myself.
Tomorrow, I'm meeting with Rob, my trainer, to talk about what my personal goal could be. I know that he'll help me pick something that challenges me personally and doesn't allow me to just go through the motions. When I meet with him tomorrow we are also getting our weight and measurements and body fat analysis so that we know where we're starting from so that we can track our progress. I think I can do a lot of changing in 90 days, I see it happen every 90 days so I'm excited to enter this challenge!

Pre-Boot Camp Picture and Picture from today 5.18.10
If you click on the picture you can see it full size. For anyone who is working out, I HIGHLY recommend taking pictures of yourself reguarly. The scale doesn't always move as quickly as you want it to but that does not mean your body isn't changing. At boot camp we take regular pcitures and measurements. The measurements are helpful as well but the pictures are more motivating for me than the measurements are.
Tuesday, May 18, 2010 Workout 1
Today at boot camp we did an intensive run. This means, we ran 2.3 miles (at a faster pace than my usual pace), ran hills, and did exercises throughout.
The exercises we did included:
Now I'm sitting here icing my shins : )......
Mama Mel and I are supposed to run together after work. I'd still love to do that so we'll have to see how I recover throughout the day.
When I say we "ran hills"....they weren't just little inclines, they were Lyon and Michigan downtown. I was worried at one point that I was going to need to walk but I pushed through, very determined. I've never run hills like that and my shins were aware of it : ). The thing is, I just kept telling myself 1. if you look down it's not a hill and 2. once you get to the top, you get to come back down. That worked the first time but then we got down Lyon and he sent us BACK UP!!!!!!!!!!
The exercises we did included:
- chest pulls
- back rows
- obliques with the resistance bands
- step ups
- side step ups (both sides)
- reverse steps with a leg lift (good for the buns)
- tricep dips
- bicep curls
- reverse crunches

For some reason, boot camp was super challenging today. I don't think I ate the right food before going so my muscles didn't have the gusto they needed. We did a circuit but we hit legs hard and my legs were burnt out!
Exercises included:
- a warm up of jogging, skipping, shuffling, butt kicks, high kicks, high knees, etc
- hoop jumps
- jump rope
- reverse crunches
- ladder runs
- push ups
- tricep dips
- pushes with resistance band
- rows with resistance band
- deep squats
- stairs (seriously 120= burnt out legs)
- bicep curls with free weights
- rows with free weights
- bench press with free weights
- even more squats with swinging weights
- chest with swinging weights
- crunches
- side crunches (both sides obviously)
- the big x sit ups
- bicycles front and back (for abs)
Saturday, May 15 & Sunday, May 16 Workouts
Crap, I got behind this weekend...that has only ever happened one other time I think! I know the blog is to keep me accountable, so I want to keep making sure to do it daily (or every other day at the LEAST).
Saturday Workout:
I helped my sister move for about 4 hours, that was definitely a work out with the lifting and stairs.
Sunday Workout: I went for a 3 mile walk and did yoga. I was stressed out and both of those things helped to clear my mind.

Thursday, May 13, 2010 Workout- Fitness Eval
The Girls on the Run 5k was canceled due to flooding of the course so I decided to go to the 5:30PM boot camp (I didn't go this morning because I thought I'd be running the 5K.
Well, today was FitPar, our regular fitness test/evaluation.
http://fitpar.com/ScoreCard/VideoLibrary
This day's FitPar with my scores:
When I got home, I puked..... a lot. I was suprised it didn't all come out at boot camp but my gosh I needed to get it out. This is the second time it's happened since I started boot camp. It was disgusting but I felt a lot better afterward. I pushed my cardio tonight harder than I've ever pushed it before. I can still feel the tightness in my chest. I am coughing horribly from the asthma.........and yet, I couldn't be happier :).
Well, today was FitPar, our regular fitness test/evaluation.
We do a series of exercises for certain time periods to see how many we can do....what our max is (see the video clips below to see what we do--- if you look closely you'll see me in some of them but it was like a year ago).

This day's FitPar with my scores:
- 1 Mile Run- 9:07 (BEST EVER!!!! I was stoked... I did a 16:00 mile the first time, crazy improvement)

- 1 minute Crunches- 104 (I did 62 the first time I did this)
- 1 minute Front Plank
- 2 minute Jump Rope- 199 (thought I might die on this, but I did 151 the first time so it was an improvement)
- 1 minute Push Ups- 34 (I only did 6 the first time so I'm proud but I want to get better at these)
- 1 minute Reverse Crunches- 66 (I only did 33 the first time I did this)

Riverbank Run 5K and the Boot Camp 90 Day Challenge
So this entry is horribly late.
The Riverbank Run 5K was a great expience. From running with friends, to doing runs on my own and enjoying 30 minutes of quiet, to doing the actual race with my big brother,
I went into it sooooo stoked to run 3.1 miles for the first time in my life and, since starting training, I've run that distance 3 times now. My quickest time was 34 minutes and, I know that isn't an amazing time, but it gives me something to strive to beat.
The race itself was interesting and I learned a lot about what it's like to run in an event like that. There were TONS of people, the weather was soo cold and windy and drizzly, etc. I think that I psyched myself out mentally and kept trying to find me 'training pace' but my training pace was for training...I should have been comfortable letting my body find a race pace. I was worried I would burn out and the very last thing I wanted to do was walk.
Even though my time wasn't what I wanted, I felt so amazing at the finish line. I am proud of myself for accomplishing a goal and I am so glad that I can see myself as a kind of person who could run a 5K. I didn't feel like I didn't belong, I felt like I was right where I should have been.
Now, what's next? I was going back and forth between if I wanted to do another 5K and improve my time, or if I wanted to go for distance and do a 10K. I decided that I want to do 5K's to improve my time. Part of that motivation is that I know you burn more calories when you do faster pace for shorter time than you do if you do slower pace for a long distance. Calorie burn and eccelerated heart rate will help me with the boot camp training too so, that's where I'm headed.
When I told my trainer that I was going to do a 5K every month through October to reach my goal of a 30minute 5K. He was hesitant about this because of the way it affects my boot camp training (my shins constantly hurt so it was hard to do both). He offered to run with me until I reach my goal of 30 minutes....that is so incredibly gracious of him. He said he'd rather see me do the Boot Camp 90 Day Challenge that is June-August. The Challenge is intensive and you set your own personal goal (like a piece of clothing you want to fit into). You need to do a certain number of days and you need to turn in food logs and have one-on-one meetings. Each time you complete a workout, your name is entered into a drawing (so the more you work out the better chances of winning you have). At the end of the challenge, the name drawn wins $1000 cash or round trip plane tix (they're trying to figure that part out).
I think this'll be great. It's a good new challenge for me.....but, it means I won't be doing a 5K every month because my body can't handle that. I think that I will do two 5Ks. I wll do the Reeds Lake 5K and the Alger Heights 5K. (Derk may talk me into the Coast Guard 5K in GH too but we'll see about that).
WANT TO DO THE 90 DAY CHALLENGE WITH ME???? Email me at aoosting@marshill.org and I'll hook you up. It'll be fun : )

Todays bootcamp was very challenging....made up for Monday I guess.
Today was the first time in a long time that I felt like I kept my heart rate up. It was challenging, but a good workout!
(my shins hurt so, if anyone is reading this and wants to pray for them, that'd be great since tomorrow is the Girls On The Run 5K)
We did a running loop around the river, doing exercises at different stations. I did my best to run at a 8/9 from station to station to help work on my speed.
The stations included: - wall sits
- step-ups
- tricep dips
- pushups (two stations of these)
- flutter kicks
- reverse crunches
- rows (with resistance band)
- flys (with resistance band)
- bicep curls (with resistance band)
- start jumps (hate these)
- we ran a flight of stairs 4 times as fast as we could
- tricep extensions (with resistance band)

Thoughts Inspired by Biggest Loser
Right now I'm watching the Biggest Loser and it's an episode where people are looking back at thier journies....which is making me look back at my journey thus far.
Now, more than ever, I am certain that my success (i.e. working out consistently for 19 months, eating healthily for 7 months straight, running my first 5k and setting future goals for fitness like more 5ks and a mini-Tri next June, etc).... I am certain that I have found this success because my goal has been to be physically fit and healthy and NOT to lose weight. Now, do I LOVE that I'm losing weight and looking better and fitting into regular sized clothing?? OF COURSE!
The thing is that, when you aim to lose weight you see success in tiny ways and it's not super consistent. When you aim to be better at physical activities than you were the day before, you see success EVERY DAY! That success is a motivator for the next day, and then that day's success is a motivator for the following, etc.
I am so excited about how far I've come physically. I can see myself doing amazing workouts before I even do them. When I was watching Daris do the sand-hill challenge on Biggest Loser tonight I could see in his eyes what I know I get in my eyes at boot camp. I could see him visualizing that he could do it, that he could win, that he was strong enough, that he had what it could take. I could see him having that confidence. If anything that I've gained, I'm so glad that I've gained that confidence. I don't see myself as the fat girl anymore. I don't see myself as the girl who can't "keep up". I don't see myself as someone who lacks drive. I see myself as strong, confident, driven.........and that's a good feeling...... a feeling that can keep me going forever.

Ok, I know I haven't written about the Riverbank Run yet, I'll get to it, I promise!
What I did to workout today:
It was sooo good to be back at Boot Camp. I normally don't go on Mondays but I think I'm going to be out late tonight so I didn't want to risk only doing 2 days this week. We focused on weight training, with very little cardio.
After stretching we ran a lap and I could tell my calf/shin connection area (sorry, don't know the scientific term) was really tight and sore still....it's been about two weeks like that...bummer! But, the short run alone loosened it up a bit.
Then, we went right into a full body weight workout.
We started with legs:
Squats
Reverse lunges
Forward lunges
Side lunges (both sides)
Leg presses on our backs
Then we moved to chest and back:
Rows
Flys
Push ups
Ground work including:
Weights overhead
Benchpress
Then we moved to arms and shoulders:
Military presses
WITY's
Bicep Curls
Bicep Curls across the chest
Bicep Curls with double weight across the chest
Tricep extensions overhead
Tricep extensions back
Then we moved into core:
Crunches
Side Crunches (both sides)
Reverse Crunches
Side Reverse Crunches (both sides)
Front Plank
I may have missed some things but that's the general work out. It was an easy one because the cardio was so light but there were some new people so he had to introduce the body parts and exercises. It was still good to move and to be outside and to be back at bootcamp!

Workout, or not:
I took the day off from running today. The training calendar only said to run 1 mile so that was just to ekep the legs loose. I did move a bunch of stuff out of my dad's house so that probably kept me loose enough. My legs aren't hurting but I'm having bad back pain....GO FIGURE!!!!! I think it's all related to "female stuff" so I took Ibuprofen and used a heating pad to loosen it up.... my goodness, if it isn't one thing it's another.
Breakfast:
Whole Wheat Bread- 80
Peanut Butter- 200
Lunch:
I went to Yesterdogs with the guys, mmm
2 yesterdogs- 450 (that is probably high)
Snack: Banana- 70
Dinner:
Mel and I went out as a "training celebration dinner" before the race tomorrow
2 bagle chips and 3 pitas with Artichoke Dip
4oz of fries
6 oz of steak with garlic butter

Today Mel and I did the training calendar running 2 minutes/ walking 2 minutes for a total of 40 minutes. At first I thought "40 minutes is going to be such a long time!" but the weather was gorgeous and the run felt good.
After a couple sets I realized how awesome it was that we weren't struggling and we were even holding conversation!!!! We've come a long way since we started!

3.1 MILES COMPLETED! May 1, 2010 Workout
Last week, my boss, who's an avid runner and has been doing races for years (mostly marathons, but still) was talking to me about taper and the decision was made that I should follow the training calendar for the week prior to the race so that I would taper properly.
Todays calendar said 2 mile run/ 3 min walk/ 1 mile run, well, that equals 3.1 and that is a 5k! I know my shins well enough to know that I couldn't do the 3minute walk part and that I'd have to run straight through. Last night Jettie and I walked a course that was mapped out at 4 miles so I knew what I had to do today.
I was glad the weather was cooler than yesterday so I got geared up and hit the pavement. For some reason, probably just God on my side and two days since my last bootcamp, my run was fairly easy as far as runs go. I did feel like I was going slowly but I couldn't go faster if I wanted to, my body was almost like "Hey, this is my pace and it's the pace I can do well with out being in pain or having to quit"......so, I listened and did the slower pace.
My Ipod trainer kept telling me 1k completed 2k completed, etc. and then as I neared the end it started counting down in meters. 400 meters to go, it cheered me on! 300 meteres, 200 meters, 100 meters.......and then CONGRATULATIONS, YOU JUST FINISEED 5Kilometers, YOUR LONGEST LOGGED WORKOUT TO DATE! (It was Lance Armonstrong on the recording so I pretended like he was really congratulating me :)).
I did the 3.1 miles in 34 minutes. I would love to do a 5K in 30 minutes, but hey, I'll take this!

Thursday, April 29, 2010 Workout #2
Even though I went to boot camp this morning for my butt kickin', I had already planned to run with my friend Mel since we haven't been able to run together this week. We ran 1.65 miles but we did it at somewhere between 10:25-10:46 pace which is faster than our normal 11:00-11:15 pace.
The weather was perfect and it was a good run but, by the end of it, my legs were tired. Not painful like sometimes, just tired. I'm glad we put a run in but it makes me feel like I need to do a long one on Saturday.
I think I'll just do a 40minute walk tomorrow around Reeds Lake or something to give my running legs a rest since today was so intense. We'll see!

Thursday, April 29, 2010 Workout #1
Todays boot camp workout was called a Tabula Rosa, or Hurricane.......this is one one of the hardest workouts we do all year at bootcamp, but also one of the most effective.
The way it works is that you get four sets of exercises...you do each one for 15 seconds (doing quick reps) until you're done with all four and then you do another set immediately after. You do four consecutive sets without breaks. Four minutes straight of the strength training exercises on the same body region may not sound like a lot, but it's a burnout!

So, if that makes sense, here are the exercises we did.

It was 34 degrees when I went to bootcamp so I wore three warm layers and gloves and a hat. We ran out to the DeVos Place from 6th Street Park and did TRX mixed with cardio for the duration of the morning. About 5 minutes into it we were all shedding our top layer and taking our accesories off because we were so hot!
We worked the tnire body on TRX and for cardio we did TONS of running and a bit of skipping and a couple sets of stairs. One time Rob had us doing lunges instead of running. I thought that he wanted us to do lunges the same distance he told us to run (we had a wall we were supposed to stop at). About half way through my lunges my legs were burnt out, I had nothing more to give. I was all alone too which was odd....I figured people were procrastinating becuase they didn't want to do all of those lunges. So, when I finally get back to the group a couple of my friends were like "we wondered where the heck you were going". Apparently we were only supposed to do 10 lunges out and 10 lunges back. I bet I did about 100....maybe more.....SERIOULY. My legs were so burnt out that the rest of the run back to the park was a slow one.
All in all, considering my body is fighting some bug, it was a good workout. Good to be outside with the full moon and teh water and the city lights.

What I did to workout today:
Today I ran for 2.5 miles and I did it in 27 minutes. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be but the last .3 miles was pretty rough and I wanted to quit........but I didn't!! I was glad about that. There really is something about running that feels so much like an accomplishment or a breakthrough for me.......even more than anything at bootcamp. Maybe it's because running has always been difficult for me--- even thinking back to elementary school and the timed mile. I remember loving basketball when I played in Junior High but I also remember SUCKING at the running drills. It feels amazing to be able to run 2.5 miles and I don't care how slow I run them! Two weeks from tomorrow is the 53 Riverbank Run!

Thursday, April 22 Workout
Today at bootcamp we started with a 1 mile solo-run. My legs could tell that I ran last night but it wasn't too bad. It really is nice to run down along the river when it's quite in downtown GR. It was FREEZING to start (I had three layers on) but I was able to strip my top layer after the run.
Then we did a large circuit including:

Looking forward to a challenge
On Saturday my friend Adam is taking me to test road bikes. He works on building bikes and has worked selling bikes for years. We're going to take a couple of them out on the road.
I have to admit, although I've conquered so many things in my workouts, bike riding really intimidates me for some reason. I'm looking forward to the challenge but a little nervous!!! (and apprehensive about the pain of that teenie tiny seat I have to sit on!)

Tuesday, April 20, Workout
Ok, let's talk about today's workout at bootcamp.
We did a mix of cardio, strength training and plyometrics (i.e. explosive jumping exercises). We started in the park, then ran down to Michigan Ave along the river and then ended up back at the park again for core. I'll try to make a list, but I'm sure I'll miss some stuff!
My trainer, Rob, is gone for the week so we have a "substitute" trainer. She's this brick-house of a woman. Only about 5'2 maybe but pure muscle and LOTS of energy. She was really nice, but really intense.

- Squat walks across the parking lot
- lunges
- hold lunges
- penquin walk across the parking lot
- wall sits (lowering a little more each time and holding)
- 1 leg wall sits (I don't think I've ever done this before and I could barely hold it)
- jump rope (frontward and backward)
- rows
- pushes
- stair steps
- tricep dips
- overhead extensions for triceps
- wall push ups
- Power-Jacks
- power- jumps
- sissy squats (definitely NOT for sissys)
- a form of skipping for a long distance
- grapevine for a long distance
- gallops for a long distance
- tai bo (about 5 different exercises). For those of you who have heard me say I want to find a boxing class.....this made me rethink it......I was so tired....especially my shoulders! I was glad it was a good core workou though.
- planks- front, side, side, one leg, then the other.......and then side plank dips- 10 on each side

Random Thought About Food
Random Thoughts About Food: (this is going to be random and I'm just going to type, not really care about how well it comes together)
Today I had this realization about my relationship with food. I realized that I don't crave it like I did before. Even furthur than that, I don't associate it with happiness. I used to think going out for dinner and having my favorite thing or enjoying a bowl of Cool Ranch Doritos or drinking a bunch of beer was super fun and equaled happiness....ok, let's be honest, it WAS fun and I generally did feel happy when I was doing it. But, things are different now, I don't feel like I need that to have fun or for an event or gathering of friends to be "special". Before, when I was talking about getting together with friends one of the main topics of conversation was about what we were going to eat. Seriously, if you think about it, you'll recognize that this is true.
Another thing I've been noticing is that, with warmer weather, comes more alcoholic beverages. I know that beer can be 200 calories and a mixed drink can be 300 if I'm not careful. Sure, I can have the occasional small glass of wine but that's even generally around 110 calories and it's hard to stick to one glass! I guess I never realized how often my social situations include alcohol until I started to count calories and record my intake. I just can't give 300 calories a day to alcohol.....and I DEFINITELY can't give 600 calories a day to it when I'm out for a long night or sitting around a bonfire.
I have decided to keep my alcohol consumption to 1-2 nights a week and try to limit my amount to 1 drink, a low calorie drink. This is going to be a challenge but it keeps alcohol a treat, so that's good.
I know that I have a lot more thoughts and realizations- seriously, being so in tune with my body, I realize new things every day. But, for now, this is it :)

Thursday, April 15, 2010 Workout & Food
Today I woke up with a screaming sore throat so I slept in (the sickness started a couple of days ago but I just kept going going going going going and I knew I was making it worse with exhaustion). I was planning on running after work anyhow so I did that and still got a work out in. I don't know if it was that my body is sick, or if it was the heat and humidity but today's run wasn't easy or really enjoyable at all.
I ran a mile and my shin was hurting so badly that I walked 1/2 mile and then finished with another mile. I kept a good pace and I still got in 2 miles of running but I was disappointed that I had to walk at all. Oh well, I guess I just need to accept that sometimes it's easier than others.
One thing I'm realizing this week is that I'm going to have difficult managing boot camp AND running. It's really rough on my body to do both in one day but, when I go to boot camp Tues, Wed & Thurs, that doens't leave any other consistent time to train for the running, execept for the weekends and I feel like Fri-Sat isn't enough......well, maybe it's enough but the break of three days is almost too long for my body and when I run again at the end of the week I feel like my body has to adjust all over again. This is really different from last week when I was off of boot camp for Spring Break. I was ONLY running and I could tell my running was getting easier and improving daily.
I don't know what any of this means, but i'm just trying to figure out how to do it all because I know I'm going to keep doing boot camp and I know that I'm committed to the Riverbank Run on May 8th. This is the calendar I was thinking of but it puts a wrech in my bootcamp schedule until May 8.
Sun- off
Monday- run
Tuesday- bootcamp
Wednesday- run
Thursday- bootcamp
Friday- run
Saturday- run
Maybe I'll just suck up doing doubles until May 8 .... hmmmmmmmmm........ (wow, I can't believe how much I just typed. I think I was just "brain dumping")

Banana- 100
Dinner:

Wednesday, April 14, 2010 Workout
Today at boot camp we did the mile loop around the river walk doing exercises at each stop that included:
Squats, chest pulls, 3 kinds of pushups (by FAR my least favorite part), tricep dips, partner pushes for different parts of the arms, etc.
Doing the loop was so rewarding today as I was able to stay at the head of the pack each quarter mile run. I used to be way far behind and would often have to walk instead of run. It was fun to see the progress today!
We ended back at the park with Tai Bo (sp?) for core and that was pretty fun.
The weather was perfect today. Not too hot, not too cold, and not too windy.
I'm tired though and now I kind of want to go back to bed............ah, but I can't......time to hit the shower instead! :)
Squats, chest pulls, 3 kinds of pushups (by FAR my least favorite part), tricep dips, partner pushes for different parts of the arms, etc.

First day back to boot camp after spring break!
Today I was reminded that I HATE waking up at 4:45am but I NEVER regret going to boot camp. I laughed, I was active, I breathed fresh air all morning (especially since it was soooooo windy down by the river!) The biggest thing I learned this morning though was that 1 week is a big deal when it comes to physical fitness.
Let's start with the positive- in 1 week I conditioned my cardio skills a ton. Today running was way easier at boot camp...well, cardio stuff in general was way easier. I couldn't believe how focusing on running for just one week last week helped me in improve in this area. We did 4 additional leg exercises today and I realized those were easier for me too (front and rear lunges and donkey kicks & fire hydrants).
Then, there's the not so positive side- in 1 week I DE-conditioned my strength training muscles. After warming up with a bit of cardio today we did a strength training circut that focused mainly on chest (pushups and pulls), shoulders (WITY's, military presses & pushups) and arms (tricep dips, curls, pushups)........and I was burnt out after 2 reps! I can normally go 5 reps just fine. Now, our shoulders are small muscles that we don't normally work on but, still, seriously, I shouldn't have been burnt at 2 reps! I made it through the whole workout though and I'm sure I'll be sore tomorrow.
We finished up with about 4 different core exercises.
Glad to be back in the grind!!

Today I ran 1 1/2 miles. I was hoping to do 2 again but my shins were sore from the 2 1/2 miles the day before so I decided to take it a bit easier. I stretched a lot yesterday with that longer run and I think that was a mistake--- for some reason, I do better the LESS I stretch. Who knows if that's good for me or not, but if it hurts, it hurts....so from now on I'm going to do minimal stretching.
It was a nice sunny day....glad the rain is slowing down!
My next mini-goal is to restock my Ipod with new running music. I can't do it without Kristen's computer though, so it'll be a bit but I really look forward to it!

Friday, April 9, 2010 Workout WOO HOO
I DID IT!!!!!
I ran 2.5 miles....without stopping. I did it in 27.3 minutes so my pace is still around 11minutes a mile. But, from what I've heard if I can run 3 miles at an 11minute pace then I should be able to do a 10 minute pace on race day because of the crowd, motivation and adrenaline.
The run today, was ok for the first 1 1/2 miles and then, about mile 2, I turned a corner to come down Baldwin and BAM, cold, blow-you-over wind. So, I thought that that last 1/2 mile would kill me but, I know sooooo much of it is mental so I pushed forward and beat it. I was SOOOOOOOOO FREAKIN excited when my I-pod told me 100 more meters.......and then, CONGRATULATIONS, you've met your goal! (gotta love technological inspiration!)
When I was stretching and icing I thought to myself "How on earth am I going to do 3 miles. Then, as I thought about it, I remembered that I used to say "How on earth am I going to run a mile??" So, I'm proud of how far I've come and I look forward to breaking more personal records.
Sounds like I'm on par for a 5K in a few weeks. Good thing!

I set out to run 2miles in 20 minutes today but I did it in 22..... that's ok though, I'll take it.
Today, mile one seemed like a breeze...which is good, I definitely wouldn't say I've ever felt like running a mile was "a breeze" before so that must mean there's impovement. The 2nd mile wasn't so great though. It was so humid! It wasn't a horrible 2nd mile by any means, but I can't wait until I'm saying that the first TWO miles were a breeze : )
Another day down....
31 days until my first 5K race!!!

Today I was going to do the training calendar with Mel- Run 2, Walk 1 for 30 minutes- but we decided to just do 2 miles straight without walking. It was great! I had the Ipod in again so that helped just like yesterday. My legs were tired from yesterday still but I didn't have that shooting pain I was having before. I stretched a bunch afterward but I can tell my thighs are still sore and will probably be sore tomorrow......but not like "pain/injury" sory, more like my muscles got worked!
Glad to see how training improves over the next week now that I've found what works well for me!

I'm soooo geeked! I just ran 2.2 miles- the most I've ever run without stopping!! I did it in 23.32 mins- so it was about a 10:52 pace but that's ok, I'll take it, at least my shins didn't break in half and I didn't stop.
One thing I noticed today was that finding that slower pace really helped my shins not hurt as badly. I also used my Ipod again, which I haven't used in a long time, and I think it helped. I couldn't hear my breathing because I kept the volume up and then I had my entire song collection on shuffle so the songs were suprises (some super old ones and ones I have memories too) so it kept my mind off of running a little bit.
Overall, I think my "success" was in the slower pace. I think I'll try to stick with this and then I can work on speeding it up later. So what if I come in dead last at the Riverbank Run, at least I'll finish 3.1 miles without walking for the first time in my life ever!
Can you tell I'm excited??? Good thing because I was horribly discouraged with my shins this week. Easier pace is better. That's my mantra this week!

What I did to work out today:
Today I did a running progression from the Gazelle's training calendar. I ran 4, walked 4, ran 3, walked 3, ran 2, walked 2, ran 1, walked about 5 (I was too far away from the house to end on time : )) Pain level today was about 8 out of 10. I'm starting to get very angry.

Dinner:
We had a Holy Saturday celebration at the Z's. I'm glad I had a late lunch because I knew I'd be tempted by lots of unhealthy food. My plate was random but overall good choices out of my overall selection.
Cucumbers & Red Peppers
1/2 tablespoon of Hummus- 20

Sauce- 60

What I did to workout today:
First, let me just say....I CAN'T BELIEVE APRIL IS ALREADY HERE!
The run today was not easy for some reason. I'm still following the 5k calendar for the most part so I did 2 min run, 2 min walk, 2 min run, 2 min walk, etc. for 20 minutes. I think that when I have short bursts of time it's harder for me to control my pace and do something comfortable so I do a faster run than I should. It was just so hard. My shins hurt.....of course.....but worst than normal....seriously. They were totally tightening up. I wonder if it was because of the extreme heat and humidity? Seriously, I don't know what to do about this and I'm getting discouraged because I know that as far as cardio and strength and core and all of that goes, I'm TOTALLY ready to run a 5K no problem.....it's just the pain. It makes me sad & discouraged. (not about my fitness in general, I'm really proud of that, but about my running progress and the possibility of continuing at a decent clip).
What I ate today:
Random note: Today I told my brother I would pick up McDonalds for him. I used to LOVE McDonalds- specifically the fries with lots of ketchup. Anyway, the first thing I noticed was that I was completely embarrassed to be in the drive through. Like I was worried if someone saw me and thought I eat that stuff and like I was embarrassed if someone who knew I was taking care of my thought saw me and thought I was cheating (why do I care what people think??) Anyway, it's a good thing. I'm glad that I don't want to be associated with McDonalds. It's not a snotty thing, it's a "I want people to know I value myself enough to not eat there normally).
Breakfast:
Whole Grain Cheerios- 170
Skim Milk- 45
Lunch:

Anyway, it's a good thing. I'm glad that I don't want to be associated with McDonalds. It's not a snotty thing, it's a "I want people to know I value myself enough to not eat there normally).
